Technical Communication Paper "Content Management and Technical Communication”

As the professionalisation of a profession progresses, the range of standardisation options for work processes or the manufacturing process increases. The advantages of standardisation are primarily of a financial nature. However, the disadvantages of standardisation are also obvious: individual deviations cannot be taken into account. Necessary reworking in turn causes costs and delays availability.

Content Management Systems (CMS) or editorial systems are the means in technical communication for the extensive standardisation of the manufacturing process, and thus the prerequisite for the industrialisation of the "Technical Documentation” product.

The topic of this article is the importance of content management for technical communication. Content management is understood here as generation and holding ready of digitally prepared information in media-neutral form.

In the article, first an overview of "Content Management in Technical Communication" is given, followed by a presentation of legal aspects. Five field reports, including one by Lars Kothes, and seven contributions on concrete individual problems round out the article.

In his "CMS in Service Companies” article, Lars Kothes deals in detail with the advantages and disadvantages of providing services with a CMS. In his future scenario, the convergence of machine functions and documentation, the digital provision of service information and the use of mobile devices play an important role.
