Nothing is more difficult than the first step. This is why we have developed methods that facilitate the start of terminology work. One of these methods is term extraction.
In term extraction, we analyse existing documents and generate basic word lists with the technical terms that appear in the documents. These are then manually cleaned so that only genuine term candidates remain. Then several terms are combined into one term and preferred terms are selected.
Depending on your wishes, we can involve you in this process at an early or late stage. In any case, it is important that the preferred terms are technically approved by your side. This is done by an employee responsible for terminology or by several departments in a coordination process. This ensures that the selected terms actually reflect your company-specific jargon.
Tools in the reconciliation process
Depending on the complexity of the coordination process, the terminology can either be created simply with Office tools (such as Excel) or entered directly in a professional terminology management system. The latter supports the coordination and discussion processes if several people in the company decide on terminology.
Translation of terms into other languages
If the terminology is structured in the source language, it can be translated into any number of foreign languages – either in one go or successively, depending on your requirements, in which case the employees of your local offices can be involved: Using a web portal or Excel lists, they check the translated terms and ensure that they work in the foreign language.
